How to Play Liar's Dice

Liar's Dice is a classic game of bluffing, probability, and deduction. Players roll dice in secret and make bids about the total number of dice showing specific values across all players. Challenge your opponents when you think they're lying! Unlike pure luck games like Pig or Bunco, Liar's Dice combines probability with psychology. If you enjoy the mental challenge, also try Dice Poker for head-to-head competition or Ship Captain Crew for traditional gambling strategy.

🎯 Game Objective

Be the last player with dice remaining! Each player starts with 5 dice. When you lose a challenge, you lose a die. The game continues until only one player has dice left.

🎲 Setup & Basic Rules

Starting Dice: Each player begins with 5 dice
Hidden Information: Keep your dice secret from other players
Wild Ones: All 1s are wild and count as any face value
Total Count: Bids refer to the total number of dice across ALL players

🗣️ Bidding Rules

Making Bids: Bid on the quantity of a specific face value you believe exists across all dice in play (including 1s as wild).
Increasing Bids: Each new bid must be higher than the previous bid:
  • Higher quantity of the same face value
  • Same quantity of a higher face value
  • Higher quantity of any face value
Example: "Three 4s" can be followed by "Three 5s", "Four 2s", or "Five 1s"

⚔️ Challenging

When to Challenge: Challenge when you believe the current bid is impossible based on what you can see and probability.
Resolution: All dice are revealed and counted (including 1s as wild).
If Bid is Met: The challenger loses a die and starts the next round.
If Bid Fails: The bidder loses a die and starts the next round.

🧠 Strategy Tips

Count Your Dice: Always know how many of each face value you have, including your 1s which count as wild.
Probability Awareness: With 10 total dice in play, certain quantities become very unlikely (e.g., "Eight 6s" is nearly impossible). This probability assessment is similar to evaluating combinations in Yahtzee or risk in Craps.
Bluffing Strategy: Sometimes bid on numbers you don't have to mislead opponents about your actual dice. This psychological element is unique among our games, unlike the pure strategy of Shut the Box or luck of Left Center Right.
Conservative Challenges: Don't challenge too early - let opponents make increasingly risky bids before calling them out.
Wild Ones: Remember that 1s are wild, so there are always more of any face value than it appears.

📈 Probability Guide

Understanding probability helps you make better bids and challenges:

  • With 10 dice total, expect about 1-2 of any specific face value
  • Including 1s as wild, expect about 3-4 total of any face value
  • Bids of 5+ of a face value (2-6) become increasingly risky
  • Bids of 7+ of any face value are extremely unlikely
